Fabric Bookmark Monsters
by GT
Fun triangular bookmarks that clip onto book pages!
Kids LOVE these silly, colorful bookmarks. They’re simple to make, teach great beginner sewing skills, and are perfect for gifts, party favors, or classroom reading rewards.

Materials Needed
- Small fabric scraps (cotton works best)
- Felt scraps (for eyes, teeth, etc.)
- Matching or contrasting thread
- Scissors
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine or hand-sewing needle
- Fabric glue (optional for decorations)
- Ruler
Step-by-Step Instructions1. Cut Your Triangle PiecesYou will need:
2 fabric triangles (same size for front and back)
1 felt triangle (same size for inside pocket – optional)
A good size is a 4-inch by 4-inch right triangle, but you can adjust as needed.
To make a right triangle:
Cut a 4" square, then cut it diagonally in half.
2. Decorate the Monster FaceThis is the fun part!
Use felt scraps to make:
Googly monster eyes
Sharp (but friendly!) teeth
Eyebrows
Spots, horns, or silly expressions
Attach the decorations with:
A few stitches OR Small dots of fabric glue (great for younger kids)
Tip: Add decorations ONLY to the front fabric triangle.
3. Make the Pocket LayerPlace your felt triangle on top of the back fabric triangle.
This will be the inside “pocket” that grips onto your book page.
Pin the layers in place.
4. Stack the PiecesLayer your triangles like this:
Front decorated triangle – right side up
Pocket triangle – felt or fabric
Back triangle – right side down
The right sides of the two fabric triangles should be touching each other.
Pin or clip around the edges.
5. Sew Around the EdgesSew along the two short edges of the triangle (the sides that form the right angle).
Leave the long diagonal side unsewn.
Use a ¼ inch seam allowance.
6. Turn Right Side OutTurn the bookmark inside out through the open diagonal edge.
Use your fingers or a blunt pencil to gently push the corners out.
Press flat with an iron for crisp edges (optional).
7. Close the OpeningFold the raw edges of the diagonal opening inward.
Sew a topstitch across the opening OR glue it shut if preferred.
This will form the final triangular pocket.
8. Finished!Your monster bookmark is ready to chomp onto a book page!
Kids love making them in many colors—purple monsters, spotted monsters, striped monsters, and silly one-eyed monsters.
